In 1849, when Domingo Ghirardelli immigrated for the United States from his homeland of Italy, he previously dreams of striking it rich within the California Gold Rush. He settled on opening a tent-store in Stockton, CA, selling various supplies and confections to fellow miners. With his start up business proving successful, Domingo thought we would open an outlet and hotel in San Francisco. Following a major fire in 1851 destroyed his businesses, he started to rebuild. In 1852, he formed a brand new confectionery company that will soon become the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company.
Domingo will be proud to determine how his chocolate company has not only grown, but flourished on the years. It started as being a dream within the mid-1800s and yes it has become a thriving company along with a leading make of premium chocolate.
